Sunday, January 13, 2013

Please join us to celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. Msgr. Jeffrey N. Steenson will speak about the newly created Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter this January, following a Mass for the Baptism of the Lord.

Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi, chaplain for the John Carroll Society, will be the principal celebrant and homilist. The Mass will be held on January 13th at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in the District, followed by brunch at the Hotel Monaco.

About the Speaker: Monsignor Jeffrey Steenson is an accomplished theologian with advanced degrees from Harvard and Oxford, an avid aviator, and a professor at the University of St. Thomas and St. Mary’s seminary in Houston, Texas. He is also a former Episcopal bishop, married, and was tapped by Pope Benedict XVI earlier this year to serve as the first Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter.

In layman’s terms, Msgr. Steenson leads a structure that is equivalent to a diocese, but national in scope. It was established to welcome groups of Anglicans seeking to become Catholic as a group while also retaining aspects of their Anglican heritage and liturgical practices. This is no small feat – after all, it has been nearly 500 years since the split between Rome and the Church of England. While Anglicans always have been able to be received into the Catholic Church through regular parishes, the Ordinariate is different because it allows “corporate reunion”: entire parishes or groups can become Catholic as a group, and use a Catholic liturgy that incorporates the beauty of the Anglican tradition. The creation of the Ordinariate represents a historic step towards reconciliation between the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches.

The Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter is the second Ordinariate created under Anglicanorum coetibus, the first having been created for the United Kingdom on Jan. 15, 2011. A third Ordinariate is now in Australia.

Registration is limited.

St. Patrick’s Church is located at 10th & G Streets, NW, one block from Metro Center and Gallery Place. Brunch will immediately follow at Hotel Monaco, 700 F Street, NW (two blocks from St. Patrick’s Church).
